For Hindus, the very name Ganapati evokes the image of the elephant-faced deity who is revered across India by people of all castes, communities, and belief systems. Lord Ganesha is worshipped by Shaivites, Vaishnavites, Shaktas, Shauryas, and especially by the Ganapatya sect. Known as the remover of obstacles, he is invoked before the beginning of any new task or venture. In Sanskrit, the word ‘gana’ means to count. From this, the term ganita is derived. As we group and categorize things in every field of knowledge whether in science, biology, astronomy, or philosophy the Lord of all such groups is Ganapati.
