The 8-day Kodiyettu Mahotsavam 2025 at Sree Maha Ganapathy Temple, Batheri, Wayanad, will be celebrated annually during January-February (Makaram) with vibrant rituals and festivities.

The festival is celebrated as a mark of the immense power and large-heartedness of Lord Ganesha who is believed to shower his blessings on every ardent devotee. Jalabhishekam (ritualized poring of wateron the idol) is an important ritual performed here. The temple is also strengthened by sub-dieties. They are Shiva, Ayyappa, Bhagavathy and Nagaraja. Sultan Bathery Ganapathy Temple, built eight centuries ago, was administered by the erstwhile rulers of Kottayam royal dynasty. Sultan Bathery was previously known as Ganapathy Vattom because of the presence of the Ganapathy temple. During the time of Kulashekara (an Indian dynasty ruling over parts of Kerala from 9th to 12th century) the place where the temple is situated was known as Purakizha. Some believe that the kings of Purakizha completed the construction of the temple. Later the temple was in the hands of the rulers of Kottayam.

The festival, attended by a large number of devotees showcase cultural events like Ottanthullal and Chakyar Koothu. The third and fourth days of this festival are remarkable for Kalamezhuthm Pattum(holy design-making accompanied by traditional folk song) is performed by the local tribal people. The designs are made with natural powders. Special songs are sung to propitiate the Goddess as part of the festival. The image of Lord Ganesha (Thidambu - a symbolic image of the deity) is taken out on a caparisoned elephant with beautiful parasols in a spectacular procession to the accompaniment of traditional temple music. This ritualistic procession on the final day of the festival, passes through the town and returns to the temple by late evening.
