The Aarattu festival attracts thousands of devotees to the Valliyoorkavu Bhagavathy Temple dedicated to Goddess Durga. It is a prominent place of worship for tribal communities in Wayanad. It is believed that the idol of the Goddess is self manifested. The origin of the temple dates back to the 14th century. Legend has it that once an oracle of Kodungallur temple named Vadakkola Nambiar was traveling through Wayanad and he rested near Kabani River. When he woke up, the sword and anklet of Devi were missing.

The holy sword of Valliyooramma, the temple deity is brought from the Palliyara Bhagavathy temple at Pandikkadavu by the chief priest. The Kodiyettu, or hoisting of the festival flag will is performed only on the seventh day of the festival. Rituals such as Kalamezhuthum Pattum, Eedum Koorum and Sopananrutham is held. A procession called Oppana Varavu is taken out from Cheramkode Bhagavathy temple to Thazhekkavu. The holy procession with tender coconut for Abhishekam, Adiyaras arrives from various parts of the talk. The celebrations conclude when the Oppana Varavu returns to Cheramkode Bhagavathy temple after the Rudhirakkolam, a symbolic fight between Bhagavathy and Dharikan in which Bhagavathy emerges victorious. Many tribesmen in the district attend the festival, which is dedicated to goddess Durga. As part of the festival a trade fair is conducted on the temple premises. Free feast known as Annadanam is held on all festival days at the temple.
