Punah Prathishta Varshika & Pongala Mahotsavam at Pattarath Sree Chamundeswari Temple, Trivandrum is one of the most vibrant and spiritually significant celebrations in the region. This festival marks the reinstallation anniversary of the deity honoring the rich traditions and devotion associated with the temple.
Devotees from across Kerala and beyond gather in large numbers to participate in the rituals, seek blessings, and experience the spiritual atmosphere of the temple premises.
The festival is a blend of religious observances, cultural events and community participation. It typically begins with the Thrikkodiyet, the ceremonial flag hoisting that signals the start of the celebrations and invites devotees to partake in the festivities. Over the course of the festival, the temple hosts a variety of traditional rituals including Aanappura Ezhunnallathu, the majestic elephant processions and the Kavadi and Agnikavadi ceremonies, which are performed as acts of devotion and penance. These processions are accompanied by traditional percussion ensembles creating a powerful and immersive spiritual experience.
A highlight of the festival is the Nercha Pongala where women devotees cook offerings of sweet rice and other traditional dishes as an act of devotion to the goddess. The festival concludes with the Aarattu, the ceremonial holy bath of the deity which is a moment of communal gathering and spiritual reflection.
