Uthrattathi Mahotsavam is one of the most anticipated annual festivals celebrated at the Vellamkulathala Sri Bhagavathi Temple in Trivandrum attracting devotees from across Kerala. This seven day festivalis dedicated to the worship of Goddess Bhagavathi revered as the divine mother and protector of the devotees. The festival is known for its combination of religious rituals, traditional art forms and community gatherings reflecting the rich cultural heritage of Kerala.
The celebrations begin with special poojas and the hoisting of the ceremonial flag marking the start of the festival. Devotees participate in various offerings and rituals seeking the blessings of the Goddess for health, prosperity and spiritual upliftment. Daily poojas are accompanied by devotional music and chants that create a spiritually vibrant atmosphere throughout the temple premises.
A highlight of Uthrattathi Mahotsavam is the performance of traditional Kerala art forms including Thayambaka, Kathakali and other folk performances, which draw large audiences. Cultural programs for children and youth are also organized emphasizing the temple’s role in preserving and promoting local traditions. Annadanam is an important feature of the festival where hundreds of devotees are served free meals each day as a gesture of divine service.
The festival also includes processions featuring decorated idols and ceremonial lamps creating a mesmerizing visual experience.
