Varkala, often referred to as “Dakshina Kashi,” is a spiritual hub in Kerala and the proud home of the Sree Janardhana Swamy Temple, where devotees experience the living presence of Lord Vishnu. According to the Brahmanda Purana, the temple was originally established by Brahma Devan.
Over centuries, natural wear, environmental factors and historical changes affected the structure, but it was later restored by the Pandya King. The temple as it stands today is a magnificent symbol of devotion, architectural excellence and cultural heritage.
The temple’s annual festival is a vibrant celebration that reflects both spiritual reverence and local cultural traditions. The festivities traditionally begin with flag hoisting and conclude with the Aarattu ritual. Among the many highlights of the festival is the Vachermukku Uruḷ Ghoshayatra, a remarkable procession that has been conducted from Vachermukku for over seven decades. This unique event has become an inseparable part of the Janardana Swamy Temple festival, drawing devotees and visitors from near and far.
A key ritual associated with the festival is the “Shayana Pradakshinam” the ceremonial circumambulation of the deity while lying down, a vow observed by devotees from ancient times. The Uruḷ procession itself is a spectacular sight, featuring elephants adorned with nets, traditional musical ensembles, floats, Thalappoli and Muthukkuda. The esteemed Travancore Devaswom Board has recognized this procession as an official part of the temple festival, ensuring that its spiritual and cultural significance is preserved for generations.
The festival also serves as a platform for Kerala’s rich artistic heritage. Renowned performers, including dancers, musicians and other traditional artists present folk and classical art forms during the celebration engaging the local community and creating a truly immersive cultural experience. The Uruḷ Mahotsavam has emerged as a golden highlight of the Janardana Swamy Temple festival symbolizing devotion, tradition and collective community spirit. Organizers honor the dedication of early contributors and local supporters acknowledging their continuous efforts in making this festival a living offering to Lord Janardana Swamy.
