Thiruvutsavam at Sri Nagar Temple in Trivandrum is one of the most awaited religious and cultural events in the region attracting devotees from across Kerala and neighboring states. The festival is an annual celebration dedicated to the presiding deity of the temple and is marked by a series of sacred rituals, devotional ceremonies and cultural programs that showcase Kerala’s rich spiritual heritage
In 2026, the festivities are scheduled to take place from January 24 to 26, coinciding with the auspicious Makaram dates in the Malayalam calendar.
The highlight of the festival is the Pongala, a unique ritual where women devotees prepare offerings of sweet rice and other traditional items in earthen pots seeking the blessings of the deity. The temple premises transform into a vibrant scene of devotion with hundreds of participants lining the streets surrounding the temple to participate in this ritual. Apart from Pongala, the festival features special poojas, abhishekams and lamp offerings all performed by the temple priests according to traditional customs.
Cultural programs form another integral part of Thiruvutsavam. Traditional dance forms like Kathakali, Ottamthullal and classical music performances are arranged to entertain and inspire devotees. Devotees also participate in processions carrying the deity’s idol through decorated streets, accompanied by temple drums and other musical ensembles creating a festive atmosphere that blends devotion with community celebration.
