Swargavathil Ekadashi 2026 at Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple is one of the most sacred and spiritually significant observances in Kerala’s temple tradition, dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his Ananthasayana form. Celebrated in the Malayalam month of Dhanu (December–January), this auspicious day is widely regarded as Vaikuntha Ekadashi symbolizing the opening of the divine gates of Vaikuntha, the celestial abode of Lord Vishnu.
On this special occasion, thousands of devotees gather at the temple seeking divine blessings and moksha. The temple atmosphere becomes highly devotional with continuous chanting of Vishnu Sahasranama, special abhishekams and elaborate poojas performed with great ritual purity. One of the most important highlights of the festival is the opening of the sacred doors of the sanctum sanctorum, believed to represent the “Swarga Vathil” or heavenly gateway.
The rituals begin early in the morning with Nirmalyam darshan, followed by Deeparadhana and various special offerings made to Lord Padmanabha. The Ekadashi Seeveli procession is another key attraction where the deity is taken around the temple in traditional Vahanams accompanied by temple music and chanting, creating a deeply spiritual atmosphere.
The temple remains open for extended hours on this day to accommodate the huge number of devotees who arrive from different parts of India and abroad. Strict traditional dress code is observed enhancing the sanctity of the event.
