ശിവരാത്രി മഹോത്സവം 2026 ശിവപുരം ശ്രീ മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രം കന്യാകുമാരി | Shivaratri Mahotsavam 2026 Shivapuram Sree Mahadeva Temple Kanyakumari
Shivaratri Mahotsavam at Shivapuram Sree Mahadeva Temple in Kanyakumari is one of the most significant and vibrant religious festivals celebrated in South India. Devotees from across the region gather at the temple to participate in a series of spiritual rituals, poojas and cultural events that honor Lord Shiva.
The festival begins early each morning with Ganapathi Homam invoking Lord Ganesha for the removal of obstacles followed by Ushapooja and Sudarshana Homam, which are performed with meticulous rituals by the temple priests. Devotees participate in Eadu reading, Karyasiddhi Pooja and other traditional ceremonies seeking spiritual blessings and prosperity. The midday offerings, or Annadanam, provide food to hundreds of devotees symbolizing community service and charity an integral part of the celebrations.
Evenings are marked by spectacular processions where the deity is taken on a palanquin procession through nearby streets accompanied by traditional instruments such as Chenda Melam, Thaalipuli, Vilakkukettu and Singari Melam. Devotees also witness Alankara Deeparadhana, Pushpa Abhishekam and special poojas which add to the devotional fervor. Cultural programs including children’s performances, bhajans and traditional music provide a harmonious blend of spirituality and entertainment.
Maha Shivaratri, the climax of the festival features night-long Yam Poojas keeping devotees awake in devotion, chanting hymns and offering prayers to Lord Shiva. The temple trust and local families sponsor various poojas, homams and community meals demonstrating the strong community involvement and devotion that makes this festival unique. Shivaratri Mahotsavam at Shivapuram Sree Mahadeva Temple is not only a spiritual experience but also a cultural celebration preserving centuries old rituals and traditions in a vibrant and devotional atmosphere.
