Thrikodiyettu Mahotsavam 2026 at Shangumugham Devi Temple, Trivandrum is one of the most sacred and vibrant festivals celebrated in Kerala attracting devotees from across the state and beyond. The festival marks the commencement of the annual temple rituals with the Thrikkodiyaet ceremony which officially opens the divine festivities.
This celebration is held in honor of Shangumugham Devi, revered as the embodiment of bliss, beauty, and benevolence, who has been worshipped at this ancient temple for centuries.
The festival spans ten days beginning on 14th March 2026 and concluding on 23rd March 2026 with the traditional Aarattu of the deity. Throughout this period, the temple comes alive with elaborate poojas, devotional music, traditional Kerala art forms and vibrant rituals. One of the key highlights is the Pongala, a special offering prepared by women devotees in the temple premises where they cook a sweet rice dish as an offering to the goddess seeking her blessings for prosperity, health and happiness.
Other important events during the festival include daily poojas, homams and cultural programs such as Kathakali, Thayampaka and classical music performances which showcase Kerala’s rich spiritual and artistic heritage. Devotees also participate in processions with the deity’s idol, accompanied by traditional percussion ensembles, creating a spiritually charged and colorful atmosphere.
The Thrikodiyettu Mahotsavam is not only a religious event but also a cultural gathering that strengthens the community spirit with locals and visitors coming together in devotion and celebration. Special arrangements for annadanam ensure that all devotees are served during the festival days. The festival concludes with the Aarattu, where the deity is taken to a nearby water body for the ritual bath symbolizing purification and divine grace.
