The Thrikodiyettu Mahotsavam at Shangumugham Devi Temple, Trivandrum is one of the most significant and spiritually enriching temple festivals in Kerala. Celebrated with deep devotion and traditional grandeur, this festival is dedicated to the divine Goddess worshipped at the revered Shangumugham Devi Temple, located in the heart of Thiruvananthapuram. The Mahotsavam brings together thousands of devotees from different parts of Kerala and beyond creating a vibrant atmosphere filled with faith, culture and devotion.
The festival begins with the sacred Kodiyettu marking the spiritual commencement of the celebrations. This ritual symbolizes the invitation of divine presence into the temple and sets the tone for the days of devotion that follow. Throughout the festival period, the temple is beautifully decorated and various special poojas, deeparadhana and offerings are performed with utmost devotion.
A major highlight of the festival is the Pongala ritual where women devotees prepare offerings in earthen pots as an expression of their devotion to the Goddess. This powerful ritual reflects the deep rooted cultural traditions of Kerala and showcases the unity and faith of the devotees. Alongside this, various cultural programs, classical art performances and devotional music are organized adding vibrancy and spiritual energy to the festival atmosphere.
The festival concludes with the grand Arattu ceremony where the deity is taken in a ceremonial procession accompanied by traditional percussion, chanting, and rituals, followed by the holy bath ritual.
