The Panguni Uthra Purusha Pongala is one of the most significant annual festivals celebrated at Pulimoottil Sree Kandhan Sastha Temple, Aryanad in Thiruvananthapuram district. This sacred observance held during the Malayalam month of Panguni is deeply rooted in devotion to Lord Kandhan Sastha, revered for his compassion, protective grace and boundless mercy towards devotees.

The festival is marked by a series of traditional rituals conducted strictly according to tantric and temple customs that have been followed for generations. The early hours begin with Palli Unarthal awakening the deity followed by Ashtadravya Samarpitha Mahaganapathi Homam, a powerful ritual performed to remove obstacles and invoke auspiciousness. Panchamrutha Abhishekam, Appam Muttal and special poojas form the spiritual core of the celebrations offering devotees an opportunity to seek blessings for prosperity, health and harmony in life.
A distinctive feature of this festival is the Purusha Pongala, a sacred offering prepared and offered exclusively by male devotees. This ritual reflects discipline, devotion, and collective prayer symbolizing surrender and gratitude to Lord Sastha. Annadanam, the free distribution of food, is another important aspect, reinforcing the temple’s commitment to service and compassion.
The festival is also renowned for its vibrant processions and cultural programs. The ceremonial Purathezunnallathu accompanied by traditional percussion ensembles such as Melam, Neyyandi Melam and rhythmic temple music transforms the surroundings into a grand spiritual spectacle.
