The Punarpratishtha Varshikam and Pongala Mahotsavam at Pattarath Sree Chamundeswari Temple in Pappanamkodu, Trivandrum is one of the most vibrant and spiritually significant temple festivals in Kerala. This annual celebration attracts devotees from across the state and beyond, providing a unique opportunity to witness traditional rituals, cultural performances and community gatherings in a sacred atmosphere.
The festival, held in 2026 from April 17 to 26 is marked by a series of religious ceremonies and festivities that honor the presiding deity, Goddess Chamundeswari and reinforce the temple’s historical and spiritual importance.
The festival begins with Thrikkodiyettam, the ceremonial flag hoisting which signifies the official start of the celebrations. This is followed by several traditional poojas, abhishekams and homams conducted throughout the festival period. A highlight of the festival is the Kavadi procession where devotees carry decorated offerings on their shoulders accompanied by traditional music and rhythmic chants, demonstrating devotion, discipline and faith. Another key ritual is the Aayilya Pooja performed with reverence to seek the blessings of the goddess for health, prosperity and protection from negative energies.
The festival also features the Neercha Pongala, a special offering where women devotees prepare a sacred sweet dish in earthen pots as an act of devotion creating a colorful and vibrant scene around the temple premises. The celebrations conclude with the Aarattu, a holy ceremonial bath of the deity which takes place in the evening at a nearby temple symbolizing purification and completion of the festival rituals.
Throughout the festival, devotees have the opportunity to participate in temple poojas, sponsor offerings and experience the rich cultural heritage of Kerala. The combination of devotion, traditional rituals, processions and community participation makes the Punarpratishtha Varshikam and Pongala Mahotsavam at Pattarath Sree Chamundeswari Temple a truly memorable and spiritually uplifting event.
