Pradosham is one of the most auspicious occasions dedicated to Lord Shiva observed twice every month on the 13th day of each lunar fortnight. At Thiru Arangal Sree Mahadevar Temple, Venpakal, Neyyattinkara, Trivandrum, the Pradosham festival holds a special significance for devotees in the region. The celebrations begin early in the morning with Halasya Parayanam, a sacred recitation of Vedic texts and hymns extolling the greatness of Lord Shiva. Devotees gather in large numbers to participate seeking blessings, purification of mind and soul and relief from worldly obstacles. The morning rituals are followed by intricate preparations for the Ashtabhishekam, the ceremonial bath of the deity using eight sacred substances including milk, honey, curd, ghee, sandalwood paste, turmeric, holy water and flowers. This ritual is believed to remove sins and bestow prosperity, health and spiritual upliftment.

In the evening, the temple witnesses the Pradosha Deeparadhana where rows of oil lamps are lit around the sanctu, creating a mesmerizing and divine ambiance. The festival also includes Thalappoli, a traditional ritual involving women carrying lighted lamps in a procession and Vadyamela, a vibrant performance of temple percussion ensembles that fills the air with devotional music. A key highlight of the festival is the Rishabha Vahanam procession where the idol of Lord Shiva is taken out on a beautifully decorated bull vehicle, accompanied by chants, music and devotional fervor. Devotees participate enthusiastically offering their prayers and seeking the grace of Lord Mahadeva.
