The Kaliyoot Mahotsavam at Pottankavu Bhadrakali Temple, Trivandrum is one of the most vibrant and spiritually enriching temple festivals in Kerala, celebrated with grandeur and devotion. Dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali, the temple becomes a hub of religious fervor and cultural splendor during this annual event.
The festival draws devotees from across the region who come to offer prayers participate in rituals and witness the unique traditions that have been preserved for generations.
The festival begins with the Thrikkodiyet, the ceremonial flag hoisting which marks the official commencement of the celebrations. This is followed by a series of sacred rituals including Nirmalyadarshanam, Ganapathi Homam, Usha Pooja and recitations of the Devi Narayaneeyam creating an atmosphere of divine energy that fills the temple premises. Devotees engage in Harinam Keerthanam, chanting the names of the deity in groups enhancing the devotional ambiance.
A special highlight of the festival is Pongala, a ritual where devotees prepare a sweet offering in earthen pots as a gesture of devotion to the Goddess. This is accompanied by traditional processions like Kalamkaval, Thalappoli, Kuthiyottam and Aarattu featuring colorful floor art, ceremonial drumming, Panchavadyam, floats and performances of local art forms such as Theyyam. These rituals not only honor the deity but also celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Kerala.
The evenings of the festival come alive with music and dance programs including classical performances, folk arts and contemporary cultural shows showcasing the talent of local artists and students. Special poojas and lamp processions are conducted each night creating a mesmerizing visual spectacle for all visitors.
