The Pongala Mahotsavam is one of the most significant and widely attended festivals at the Attukal Bhagavati Temple in Trivandrum, Kerala.
This annual event renowned for its scale and devotion is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Attukal Amma who is revered as the mother of the universe and protector of her devotees. The 2026 festival attracting hundreds of thousands of women devotees from across India and abroad. It is particularly famous as a women-centric festival, where devotees gather to prepare the ritualistic offering known as pongala, a sweet rice dish cooked in earthen pots as a symbol of devotion and gratitude.
The festival begins with traditional rituals such as Palliyunarthal, Abhishekam and Deeparadhana conducted under the guidance of temple priests. Throughout the festival, various cultural and religious programs are organized including Thottampattu, devotional music performances, Bhajans, and classical dance presentations, which narrate the stories of the goddess and her divine interventions. These performances often conducted in the temple precincts and designated auditoriums create an atmosphere that blends spiritual devotion with Kerala’s rich cultural heritage.
The event culminates in the grand offering of Pongala where women devotees line the streets and temple surroundings with clay stoves preparing the sacred rice offering simultaneously. This sight is considered one of the largest gatherings of women for a religious ritual in the world. The festival also emphasizes community participation, discipline, and devotion, with arrangements for prasadam distribution, guidance for pilgrims and temple rituals meticulously planned to ensure a smooth and meaningful experience for all attendees.
