The Pongala Mahotsavam at Thozhuvankode Sree Chamundi Devi Kshetra Trust in Trivandrum is one of the most significant and eagerly awaited festivals in Kerala. Celebrated with immense devotion and grandeur, this festival draws thousands of devotees especially women from across the state and beyond.
The temple, dedicated to Goddess Chamundi Devi, becomes a hub of spiritual energy during this auspicious occasion. The festival is renowned for the sacred Pongala ritual in which devotees prepare a special offering of rice, jaggery, coconut and other traditional ingredients in earthen pots to please the Goddess and seek her blessings.
Preparations for the Mahotsavam begin days in advance with the temple premises being decorated with vibrant flowers, traditional lamps and colorful rangoli designs. Devotees arrive early in the morning to secure their spots for the ritual and the atmosphere is filled with chants, devotional songs and the fragrance of incense. The highlight of the festival is the collective Pongala offering where thousands of women gather around the temple courtyard each preparing the divine porridge while singing hymns and prayers. This ritual symbolizes devotion, unity and the empowerment of women in the spiritual domain.
In addition to the Pongala ritual, the festival also features various poojas, homams, and special abhishekams for the deity.
