Meenabharani Mahotsavam is one of the most vibrant and spiritually significant festivals celebrated at the Palkkulangara Devi Temple in Trivandrum. This ten-day festival attracts devotees from across Kerala and beyond who come to experience the divine aura, elaborate rituals and rich cultural traditions associated with the temple.
The festival is dedicated to the worship of the Goddess Bhagavathi and it embodies centuries of tradition, faith and local artistry.
The celebrations begin with the ceremonial awakening of the deity followed by sacred rituals such as Abhishekam, Deepa Aradhana and Sreebali offerings. Devotees participate in Lalitha Sahasranama parayanam chanting the thousand names of the Goddess which is believed to bring spiritual merit, prosperity and protection from negative energies. Special poojas and offerings are performed daily by the temple authorities and local devotees creating an atmosphere of devotion and reverence throughout the temple premises.
One of the highlights of the Mahotsavam is the majestic elephants’ procession where the temple idol is paraded on beautifully decorated elephants accompanied by traditional percussion ensembles like Panchavadyam and Chenda Melam. This is a visual and auditory spectacle that draws large crowds and creates an atmosphere of excitement and reverence simultaneously. In addition to the rituals, the festival showcases an impressive lineup of cultural programs including classical dance performances, devotional music concerts, Thiruvathir, Kolattam and storytelling sessions that celebrate Kerala’s rich performing arts traditions.
The festival also emphasizes community involvement through Annadanam where devotees and local residents contribute to feeding hundreds of people fostering a sense of unity and devotion
