The Panguni Uthram Thrikkodiyet Ooruchuttu Ootu Mahotsavam at Thittachal Sreedharma Sastha Temple, Trivandrum is one of the most significant and eagerly awaited religious celebrations in the region.
Celebrated annually during the auspicious day of Panguni Uthram, this festival attracts devotees from across Kerala and beyond who come to seek the blessings of Lord Ayyappa and participate in the vibrant spiritual and cultural activities associated with the temple.
The festival is marked by a series of traditional rituals that have been preserved for generations. Preparations for the Mahotsavam begin days in advance with the temple premises meticulously cleaned and decorated and sacred offerings arranged to honor the deity.
A central highlight of the celebration is the Thrikkodiyet, a ceremonial flag hoisting that symbolizes the official commencement of the festivities and invites devotees to partake in the spiritual atmosphere.
During the Mahotsavam, the Ooruchuttu procession plays a crucial role where the idol of the deity is carried around the temple and surrounding areas in a grand display of devotion. Accompanying the procession are traditional Kerala percussion performances, chants and devotional songs that create an atmosphere of collective reverence and joy. The festival also features Ootu, a ritualistic offering of food to the deity which is considered a sacred act of gratitude and devotion.
