The Pongala Mahotsavam at Mundakkal Bhagavathi Temple in Trivandrum is one of the most vibrant and spiritually significant festivals celebrated in Kerala. This grand event is dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathi symbolizing prosperity, protection and divine grace.
The festival draws devotees from across the region who come to offer their prayers and seek the blessings of the goddess in a highly devotional and culturally rich environment.
The festival spans multiple days beginning each day with early morning rituals such as Nirmalyam, the ceremonial cleansing of the sanctum and Abhishekam, the sacred bathing of the deity. Ganapathi Homam, a fire ritual invoking Lord Ganesha is performed to remove obstacles and bless the devotees. Following this, special offerings such as Unniyappam and other prasadas are presented to the goddess along with elaborate ceremonies like Ashtabhishekam, Kalash Abhishekam and Pushpa Abhishekam which involve floral decorations and consecration rituals.
Throughout the day, various poojas and devotional activities take place including Usha Pooja, Noon Pooja and evening Sandhya Deeparadhana creating a continuous rhythm of devotion and spiritual energy in the temple premises. The festival also features cultural programs including traditional music, folk dances and visual performances by renowned local artists adding vibrancy and communal participation to the celebrations.
A distinctive highlight of the festival is the Pongala offering where women devotees prepare a special sweet dish in open courtyards as an offering to the goddess, symbolizing surrender, devotion and divine blessing. The temple premises are adorned with lamps, flowers and decorative arrangements creating a sacred and festive atmosphere. The festival concludes with community meals, blessings and devotional music leaving devotees with a profound sense of spiritual fulfillment.
