Thiruvutsavam at Mulliyankavu Devi Temple, Trivandrum is one of the most revered and vibrant annual festivals in Kerala, celebrated with deep devotion, elaborate rituals and cultural grandeur. The festival is dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali, the fierce and compassionate deity of the temple who is worshipped as the protector of devotees and the guardian of righteousness.
Mulliyankavu Devi Temple is historically significant known for its rich traditions, age old customs and the spiritual fervor of its devotees.
During Thiruvutsavam, the temple comes alive with a series of sacred rituals, starting with early morning prayers, ceremonial awakening of the deity and the offering of elaborate homams including Maha Ganapathi Homam and other special poojas performed by the chief priest. The daily routine also includes Nirmalya Darshan which allows devotees to witness the deity in all her divine splendor creating an atmosphere of spiritual devotion and serenity.
Devotees and visitors witness traditional art forms such as Thottam Pattu, Ottanthullal, Chakyar Koothu and classical dance performances that bring the legends and stories associated with the Goddess to life. The temple premises resonate with devotional music, Sopana Sangeetham, and bhajans, fostering a sense of unity, devotion and cultural pride among participants.
A highlight of the festival is the Pongala, a ritual where women devotees prepare offerings of rice, jaggery and coconut in earthen pots to seek the blessings of the Goddess. This event draws devotees from far and wide creating a spiritually charged and festive atmosphere around the temple. The grand procession, Vilakku and Seeveli and Kuthiyottam performances further enrich the experience making the festival a unique blend of devotion, tradition and cultural vibrancy.
