The Thrikodiyettu and Pathamudaya Pongala Mahotsavam at Mekkolla Sree Bhagavathi Temple, Thiruvananthapuram is a spiritually vibrant and culturally rich annual festival that reflects the deep rooted traditions of Kerala temple worship. Dedicated to the divine presence of Goddess Bhagavathi, the festival is celebrated with immense devotion drawing large numbers of devotees from nearby regions and beyond.
The festival begins with the sacred Thrikodiyettu symbolizing the formal commencement of the festivities. From this moment, the temple atmosphere transforms into a hub of devotion with the continuous chanting of hymns, performance of traditional rituals and offering of prayers. Daily ceremonies include Ganapathi Homam, Ushapooja, Navakalasha Pooja, Kumkumabhishekam and Sree Bhootha Bali, each performed with strict adherence to age-old customs and tantric traditions.
One of the most significant highlights of the festival is the Pathamudaya Pongala, a powerful offering made by devotees especially women who prepare Pongala as a symbol of gratitude and prayer for prosperity, health and well being. The sight of hundreds of devotees participating in this ritual creates a deeply spiritual and communal experience.
The festival also features a variety of traditional and cultural programs such as Bhajans, Thiruvathira, Kaikottikali and devotional music performances, adding a vibrant cultural dimension to the celebrations. Another important ritual is the Pallivetta symbolizing the divine victory of good over evil.
The grand finale is marked by the sacred Thiru Aarattu where the deity is taken in a majestic procession for the holy ritual bath accompanied by traditional music and temple customs. Overall, the festival stands as a beautiful expression of faith, unity and Kerala’s timeless spiritual heritage.
