The Thrikkodiyettu Medapunartham Pongala Mahotsavam is one of the most revered and vibrant festivals celebrated at the Sree Udiyanoor Devi Temple in Trivandrum, Kerala. This festival holds a special place in the hearts of devotees, particularly women who participate with immense devotion and enthusiasm.
The term “Pongala” refers to a ritualistic offering of sweet rice, cooked in earthen pots which is considered a sacred act of devotion to Goddess Udiyanooramma, an incarnation of divine feminine power. Devotees believe that offering Pongala fulfills their wishes, brings prosperity and ensures the well-being of their families.
The festival begins with the ceremonial hoisting of the temple flag, known as Thrikkodiyettu marking the official commencement of the celebrations. Following this, a series of traditional rituals, poojas and devotional offerings are conducted according to ancient customs. The temple premises are adorned with colorful decorations, lights and floral arrangements creating a spiritually uplifting atmosphere that attracts devotees from across Kerala and beyond.
Cultural programs form an integral part of the festivities with performances of classical dance forms, bhajans, music concerts and devotional storytelling taking place throughout the day. These programs not only entertain but also deepen the participants’ spiritual connection with the Goddess. Special attention is given to community participation with devotees actively involved in preparing the Pongala, organizing processions and assisting in various temple activities.
The festival concludes with the Aarattu, a grand ritual bath of the deity in the sacred waters, accompanied by ceremonial processions, traditional percussion ensembles and elaborate rituals. This marks the culmination of the Mahotsavam leaving devotees with a profound sense of spiritual fulfillment and joy.
