Makham Nakshatra Mahotsavam is one of the most important annual religious celebrations held at Kattachira Sree Bhagavathi Temple Trust, Thundathil P.O., Karyavattom, Thiruvananthapuram. The festival marks the consecration anniversary of the temple along with the sacred Makham Nakshatra day during which the divine presence of Goddess Bhagavathi is believed to be especially powerful and benevolent. Rooted deeply in Kerala’s temple traditions, the festival is observed with great devotion, ritual purity and active participation of devotees from nearby regions. The celebrations span several days in the Malayalam month of Makaram combining elaborate poojas, homams, offerings and cultural programs. Each day begins in the early hours with Nirmalya Darshanam and Usha Pooja, followed by Ashtadravya Maha Ganapathi Homam, Deepaaradhana and special poojas dedicated to various forms of the Goddess. Rituals such as Bhagavathi Seva, Kumkumabhishekam, Pushpabhishekam, Thulabharam, Parayeduppu and Gurusi are conducted with strict adherence to traditional temple customs, invoking prosperity, protection and spiritual well being for devotees.

The temple also houses several sub deities including Ganapathi, Yakshiyamma, Kirathamurthy and Nagaraja and special offerings are made to these deities during the festival days. Evening sessions are enriched with Thottam Pattu, Bhadrakali Pattu, Kuthiyottam Thalappoli procession and traditional lamp rituals creating a spiritually vibrant atmosphere. Cultural programs such as classical dance, devotional music and thematic performances by reputed institutions add to the grandeur of the festival. Beyond rituals and celebrations, the festival upholds the temple’s guiding principle of “Manava Seva Madhava Seva” emphasizing service to humanity as service to the divine.
