Makayiram Thiruvutsavam is one of the most sacred annual celebrations observed at the Sree Rama Hanuman Swamy Temple in Janardhanapuram, near Varkala in Thiruvananthapuram district. The festival is conducted in reverence to Lord Sree Ramachandra Swamy under the Makayiram star in the Malayalam month of Kumbham. The temple situated near the sacred Chakratheertha pond and in the divine presence of Sree Janardhana Swamy is renowned for the powerful idol of Lord Rama along with Sita Devi and Bhakta Hanuman. A rare south-facing Veera Hanuman in a fierce yet protective form is a special attraction of the temple believed to bless devotees with strength, courage, knowledge and protection from obstacles. Sita Devi is worshipped as the embodiment of prosperity, harmony and family well being.

The festival day begins in the early morning with Nirmalyam and Abhishekam followed by the sacred Ashtadravya Maha Ganapathi Homam and Usha Pooja. Devotional recitations of the Ramayana fill the temple atmosphere with spiritual vibrations. Special Kalasa Pooja led by the temple Thantri is performed with traditional Vedic rituals. Various abhishekams including milk, tender coconut, rose water and kalabham are offered to the deity symbolizing purity and devotion. Annadanam is conducted at noon as a sacred act of charity and service. In the evening, the temple is beautifully decorated with lamps and flowers. Deeparadhana, Pushpabhishekam, traditional music and fireworks create a divine and festive ambiance. Devotees actively participate in special offerings such as ghee lamp circumambulation and various vazhipadus seeking blessings for health, prosperity, education, marriage and overall well being.
