The Makaravilakku Mahotsavam at Alanthara Sree Dharma Sastha Temple in Trivandrum is one of the most revered and spiritually vibrant festivals in Kerala. Celebrated annually in the Malayalam month of Dhanu, this festival draws devotees from all over the region to participate in sacred rituals and traditional ceremonies that have been observed for generations.
The three day event is marked by a series of elaborate poojas, cultural programs and community gatherings that highlight the temple’s rich religious and cultural heritage.
Each morning of the festival begins with the Palliyunarthal, the ceremonial awakening of the deity followed by Neyyabhishekam a sacred ritual where holy ghee is offered to Lord Dharma Sastha.
Devotees also participate in Ganapathi Homam seeking the blessings of Lord Ganesha for prosperity and success. The annual Kalashapooja is conducted under the guidance of the temple Tantri ensuring that the rituals are performed with complete adherence to traditional customs. Deepaaradhana, the worship with lamps forms an integral part of the daily rituals creating a mesmerizing spiritual atmosphere in the temple premises.
Evening festivities feature Nadathurakkal, the ceremonial procession along with elaborate lamp processions such as Thalappoli and Vilakku, which illuminate the temple surroundings and add to the festive charm. Cultural programs including classical and folk dance performances, music concerts and fusion art forms by local schools and clubs enrich the festival experience offering both devotees and visitors a glimpse into Kerala’s vibrant performing arts tradition.
