Maha Shivaratri Mahotsavam at Kushakkode Sree Mahadevar Temple is one of the most spiritually significant annual festivals observed in the Thirumala region of Thiruvananthapuram district, Kerala. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the festival draws a large number of devotees who gather to seek blessings through prayer, fasting and participation in sacred rituals. The temple, administered by the Travancore Devaswom Board becomes a vibrant center of devotion and cultural expression during this auspicious occasion. The celebrations are marked by a series of traditional temple rituals that begin in the early hours of the day and continue uninterrupted through the night symbolizing the victory of spiritual awakening over ignorance. Devotees observe strict vratham and engage in continuous worship including abhishekams performed with sacred offerings such as milk, honey, ghee and tender coconut. Special homams notably the Mrityunjaya Homam and Maha Ganapathi Homam are conducted to invoke divine grace for health, prosperity and well being.

A major highlight of the festival is the Ahorathra Akhanda Nama Japam, a 24 hour continuous chanting of the divine names creating an atmosphere filled with devotion and positive spiritual energy. Various poojas are performed at prescribed intervals throughout the day and night following ancient temple traditions. The temple also organizes Annadanam offering free meals to devotees reflecting the spirit of service and compassion that forms the core of Sanatana Dharma. In addition to religious observances, the festival features cultural programs held in the temple premises during the evening hours. Classical music, devotional songs and traditional art forms add to the festive ambience making the celebration spiritually uplifting and culturally enriching. Special processions including Sree Bhoothabali Ezhunnallippu on Rishabha Vahana further enhance the grandeur of the event.
