The Kaliyootu Pongala Mahotsavam 2026 at Thozhukkal Sree Bhadrakali Temple is one of the most spiritually vibrant annual celebrations in the Neyyattinkara region of Thiruvananthapuram district.
This sacred festival is dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali, the presiding deity of the temple, who is worshipped as a powerful embodiment of protection, courage and divine motherly grace. The festival brings together thousands of devotees who participate with deep devotion, traditional fervor and community unity.
The celebrations traditionally begin with the ceremonial flag hoisting marking the formal commencement of the festival. Over the following days, the temple premises become a center of continuous rituals, special poojas, devotional performances and cultural observances.
One of the most significant highlights of the festival is the sacred Pongala offering, where women devotees prepare a ritualistic sweet offering in earthen pots as a mark of gratitude and prayer to the Goddess. The atmosphere during Pongala is filled with devotion, chanting and the fragrance of offerings prepared in unison.
Kaliyootu, a traditional ritual performance symbolizing the victory of Goddess Bhadrakali over evil forces, forms a core spiritual element of the celebrations. The festival also features Kuthiyottam, a traditional votive ritual performed by young boys as an offering of devotion and the colorful Thalappoli procession where women and girls carry decorated plates accompanied by traditional music and temple percussion. The concluding Gurusi Aarattu ritual signifies the ceremonial completion of the festival with sacred rites performed in accordance with long standing temple traditions.
