The Kaliyoot Mahotsavam at Phanamukhat Shri Bhadrakali Temple in Keezharoor, Trivandrum is one of the most significant and vibrant temple festivals in Kerala. Celebrated annually, this seven day festival draws devotees from across the region to witness a rich blend of devotion, tradition and cultural artistry.
The festival is dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali, revered as a powerful and protective deity, and it showcases a unique combination of rituals, performances and community celebrations that have been preserved over generations.
The festival begins with the ceremonial Kodiyettam symbolizing the official commencement of the festivities. Each day of the Mahotsavam is marked by a series of spiritual rituals including Ganapathi Homa, special poojas and offerings to the deity, which are performed under the guidance of the temple priests. Devotees actively participate in these rituals offering Pongala and other sacred offerings, seeking blessings, protection and prosperity.
In addition to the religious observances, the festival is a spectacular showcase of traditional Kerala art forms. Visitors can enjoy Thalappoli processions, Kaikottikali dances, Melam and devotional songs, as well as special performances by local and guest artists. Cultural programs like folk dances, mono acts, cinematic fusion dances and musical concerts are organized in the evenings creating a festive atmosphere that blends spirituality with entertainment.
The festival also emphasizes community participation and service. Daily community feasts bring devotees together to share a lavish traditional meal fostering social harmony and devotion. Special events such as Deepak Darshanand Kuthiotta Thalappoli procession are highlights that attract large crowds. Over the years, Kaliyoot Mahotsavam has become not just a religious event but also a celebration of Kerala’s cultural heritage, devotion and collective spirit.
