The Shivaratri Mahotsavam 2026 at Keleswaram Sree Mahadevar Temple in Trivandrum is a grand celebration of devotion, tradition and cultural heritage, attracting devotees from across Kerala and beyond. This annual festival, dedicated to Lord Shiva, combines sacred rituals, elaborate poojas and vibrant cultural programs making it a spiritually immersive experience for all attendees.
The temple which has a rich history spanning over a thousand years becomes the focal point of intense devotion during these auspicious days.
The festival features a series of important rituals beginning with the Nirmala Pooja and Abhishekam, followed by the Panchaamrutha Abhishekam where devotees offer a blend of five sacred substances to the deity. Ganapathi Homa and the Mahamrityunjaya Homa are performed to invoke blessings for prosperity, health and protection from negative energies.
Another highlight is the Kalabha Abhishekam, a ritual that symbolizes the sanctification of the temple’s sacred space accompanied by chanting of Vedic hymns that create a spiritually charged atmosphere.
Apart from the rituals, the festival also emphasizes cultural programs including classical dance performances, devotional music and evening Bhavagita Sandhya sessions where traditional singing fills the temple premises with divine melodies. The celebration includes a grand Thalappoli procession and Pushpabhishekam, where devotees offer flowers to the deity adding a visual spectacle to the devotion.
The festival is also known for the Kaleshwaram Sadya, a traditional feast prepared in the temple kitchen served to hundreds of devotees reflecting the community spirit and generosity associated with the temple.
