The 77th Varshika Mahotsavam at the Jail Sree Maha Ganapathy Temple in Poojappura, Thiruvananthapuram is a grand annual celebration that attracts devotees from across Kerala and beyond. This historic temple dedicated to Lord Ganesha becomes a vibrant center of devotion, culture and tradition during the festival.
The Mahotsavam is marked by a series of meticulously planned religious rituals, cultural programs and community offerings, all conducted with great reverence and devotion.
The festival begins each day with the ceremonial awakening of the temple followed by the Nirmalya Darshan allowing devotees to witness the divine aura of Lord Ganesha in the sanctum. A highlight of the celebration is the Ashtadravya Mahaganapathi Homam, an elaborate fire ritual performed to seek the blessings of Lord Ganesha for prosperity, health and spiritual well-being. Devotees also participate in Kalasha Pooja and Kalashabhishekam where sacred pots filled with holy water and decorated with flowers are consecrated to the deity.
Devotional singing sessions fill the temple premises with spiritual music while performances of Bharatanatyam, Thiruvathira, Kaikottikali and other traditional art forms provide a visual and emotional feast for the audience. Musical orchestras, cinematic dance performances and local art troupes contribute to the vibrant cultural atmosphere.
Community participation is a key feature with Annadanam organized for all devotees symbolizing charity and togetherness. The festival grounds are adorned with floral decorations, ceremonial lamps and other festive embellishments enhancing the spiritual and aesthetic experience.
