The Kumbha Bharani Desiya Mahotsavam 2026 at Velavoor Bhagavathi Temple, Trivandrum is one of the most celebrated and culturally rich festivals in Kerala. This eight day festival falling in the Malayalam month of Kumbham attracts devotees from across the state and beyond to participate in a series of vibrant rituals, traditional performances and devotional ceremonies. The festival begins with the ceremonial Kodiyettam signaling the start of the Mahotsavam, followed by daily temple rituals such as Nirmalya Pooja, Ashtadravya Mahaganapathi Homam and Uchappooja. Devotional songs, collectively known as Thottam Pattu, are sung to invoke the goddess and energize the ceremonial proceedings. Special highlights include Thookkam, a ritualistic hanging performed by devotees, and Kuthiyottam, a symbolic offering involving young participants. Both rituals are accompanied by elaborate preparations, decorations and musical ensembles, showcasing the devotion and artistry of the local community.
