Chithirai Thiruvizha Anizham Aarattu Mahotsavam at Oottara Sree Chidambaranatha Temple in Thiruvananthapuram is a grand and spiritually significant annual temple festival celebrated with deep devotion, rich traditions and vibrant cultural expressions. Known as one of the most important festivals of the temple, it reflects the divine presence of Lord Sri Chidambaranatha along with Goddess Shivakamasundari who are worshipped here with unique rituals blending both Tamil and Kerala traditions.
The festival is marked by elaborate poojas, special abhishekams, traditional homams and offerings to Lord Ganesha, who is revered in the temple through the ancient Sri Moola Ganapathi shrine. Devotees consider the deity as highly powerful and wish fulfilling and special offerings such as Unniyappam and other sacred naivedyams are prepared during the festival days.
A major highlight of the celebration is the grand cultural and spiritual programs conducted every day including bhajans, classical and semi-classical dance performances, devotional music and spiritual discourses by respected scholars and spiritual leaders. The temple becomes a vibrant center of devotion, where thousands of devotees gather to participate in rituals and seek blessings.
The festival also includes traditional Kerala rituals such as Pallivetta, Aarattu and community feasts offered to devotees. The processions are accompanied by traditional Panchavadyam and Nadaswaram performances creating a divine and festive atmosphere throughout the temple surroundings.
Another important aspect of the festival is the community participation where devotees actively contribute offerings, sponsor poojas and take part in organizing cultural events. The temple trust ensures that all rituals are conducted according to ancient traditions, preserving the spiritual heritage of the temple.
