Thaipooyam Festival 2025 | Chakkai Balasubramanya Temple Trivandrum

The Thaipooyam Festival at Chakkai Balasubramanya Temple, Trivandrum, is celebrated annually in January-February (Makaram). This 7-day festival includes rituals, vibrant processions, and cultural performances, drawing devotees from the surrounding areas to worship Lord Subrahmanya.

തിരുവനന്തപുരത്തെ ചാക്കൈ ബാലസുബ്രഹ്മണ്യ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ തൈപ്പൂയം ഉത്സവം എല്ലാ വർഷവും ജനുവരി-ഫെബ്രുവരി മാസങ്ങളിൽ (മകരം) ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നു. ഈ 7 ദിവസത്തെ ഉത്സവത്തിൽ ആചാരാനുഷ്ഠാനങ്ങൾ, ഊർജ്ജസ്വലമായ ഘോഷയാത്രകൾ, സാംസ്കാരിക പ്രകടനങ്ങൾ എന്നിവ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു, ചുറ്റുമുള്ള പ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നുള്ള ഭക്തരെ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യനെ ആരാധിക്കാൻ ആകർഷിക്കുന്നു.

Thankappaswami built this temple. When he was a child, he is a great bhakthan (devotee) of Subrahmanya Swami. Tantric are performed by him. His main hobby is to visit every Subrahmanya temple regularly. One day he got information from his mind (ulvili) that built a temple There after a small structure was built and the Balasubrahmanya idol was installed therein. Kanniyamma,Yogiswaran and mantramoorthi are also installed. Poojas are performed in the early morning. Few years later, due to his old age diseases, he asked Shanmukha (nephew of Thankappaswami) to take part in pooja.

Gradually, he should handover the full responsibility of the temple. At first he thought that his job and the adoration of temple go together. Gradually he discarded his job. The devotees are firmly believed that the Shanmukha's Shakthivishesham after praying by offerings of Moolamanthra to the main deity. Sree muruka will cease perils and hardships. Thousands of devotees called him Shanmukha Swami due to his unending love, mercy and devotion. People from different countries came here to offer worship (Tuesday, Friday and Sunday are the special days of the temple).

Few years later, when Shanmukha Swami was sitting in yoga he thought that he wanted to reconstruct the temple. He was built a temple with the help of temple architecture. Other sub-deities also installed therein. The poojas are increased due to the renovation of the temple, Unnipotty's father Shanmukha swami told him to perform poojas, who is interested in poojas in his childhood. The main reason is that many priests came here to perform pooja.All are failed to perform pooja. Finally, they put devaprasna and revealed that the priests can't perform pooja due to dislike of God.

God likes that the Poojas are performed by the children. With the advice of Unnipotty's father, he studies tantric poojas. Later he became a scholar of astrology. Legend associated with this festival is that Devas were defeated by an Asura king named Tharakasura. Devas took shelter and prayed to Lord Shiva to save them from the demons. Lord Shiva created 'Skanda - the evil vanquisher' from his own power and mother Goddess Parvathi gifted him a 'Vel' to destroy the Asuras. Under the leadership of Skanda (Subrahmanya/ Muruga) Devas fought with the Asuras and won the battle as Tharakasura was killed by Skanda. Thaipooyam Festival in Kerala is celebrated to recognise the victory of Skanda over Tharakasura.

Thaipooyam Festival is celebrated during the month of Makaram (January-February). On the first day, the flag is hoisted after Ganapathi Homam. The function continues for 7 days. Annadanam is provided to devotess on all the days of festival. In the evening, one can witness the Deeparadhana, Bhasmabhishekam, Pushpabhishekam etc. Various cultural programmes like dance, folk songs and concerts are organized as part of the festival. The main ritual is the Agnikavadi in the evening.

Pushpakavadi and Velkavadi from Kanjiravilakam Devi temple also joins the group. Kavadiaatam is the main offering related to this festival. The devotees have to undergo 41 days of penance to perform Kavadi as per the rituals. Kavadi Vrutham demands wearing a Rudraksha Mala or Tulsi Mala worshipped in the temple, a strict vegetarian diet and observe celibacy. The success of the Vrutham depends on following the guidelines strictly and completing the 41 days of penance. Thaipooyam Ezhunellathu, which is a Kavadi procession is the highlight of the festival. The festivities draw to a close with the sacrificial offering of Vedikettu post Athazhapooja.
