Kumbha Bharani Utsavam is one of the most important annual festivals celebrated at Sree Kunnuvila Bhagavathi Temple, located at Pillaveedu Nagar, Kesavadasapuram in Thiruvananthapuram. Dedicated to Bhagavathi, the presiding deity, the festival is observed with deep devotion, traditional rituals and vibrant cultural expressions that reflect the rich temple heritage of Kerala
The celebrations draw a large number of devotees from Thiruvananthapuram and nearby regions making it a significant spiritual gathering.
The festival spans several days and is marked by a series of sacred poojas and offerings conducted according to traditional temple customs. Devotees are given the opportunity to pre book important rituals such as Ganapathi Homam, daily poojas and Pushpa Alankaram allowing them to participate more personally in the worship. Special poojas are performed throughout the festival period invoking divine blessings for prosperity, health and well being.
A major highlight of the festival is the conduct of Thottampattu, a traditional ritual song offering dedicated to the deity, along with Akathezhunnellippu and Purathezhunnellippu, the inner and outer ceremonial processions that enhance the spiritual atmosphere of the temple. Rituals like Kuthiyottam Urul and Thalappoli add to the visual and devotional grandeur showcasing age old customs passed down through generations. Mangala Guruthi, an important offering associated with Bhagavathi worship, is also performed during the festival days.
Pongala is another key event observed with great devotion by women devotees symbolizing surrender and gratitude to the Goddess. This offering is conducted on a specified auspicious day during the festival and is considered highly sacred. After the conclusion of the festival, the temple observes a reopening day marked by Ganapathi Homam, Kalasha Pooja and Kalasha Abhishekam signifying spiritual purification and renewal.
