The Aswathi Thirunal Mahotsavam 2026 at Edapparambu Bhagavathi Temple in Varkala, Trivandrum is one of the most celebrated temple festivals in Kerala, drawing devotees from across the state and beyond.
The festival begins each morning with the traditional Nadathurappu and Abhishekam followed by Usha Pooja and Ganapathi Homam where devotees offer prayers and special offerings for the well being of their families and communities.
A key highlight of the Mahotsavam is the Bhagavatha Parayanam, where sacred texts are recited accompanied by devotional music and the Thottampattu, a unique ritual song performed to honor the Goddess. The festival also features the mesmerizing Panchavadyam, a traditional orchestra of five instruments, and spectacular Kathakali performances presenting episodes from the epics with intricate facial expressions, gestures and storytelling. In the evenings, devotees participate in Deepa Aradhana and Vilakku ceremonies creating a spiritual ambiance throughout the temple premises.
The festival also includes Arattu, the ceremonial procession and holy bath of the deity along with special cultural performances, traditional dance and music programs which are attended by large gatherings of devotees and tourists alike. Food offerings like Annadanam and community feasts add to the festive spirit while flower decorations ritualistic abhishekams and special commemorations for devotees loved ones enhance the sanctity of the celebration.
