Aswathi Pongala is one of the most vibrant and spiritually significant festivals celebrated at the Thengumvila Bhagavathy Temple in Trivandrum, Kerala. This annual event draws thousands of devotees especially women who come together to offer Pongala,a special ritual involving the cooking of a sweet rice mixture as an offering to the Goddess.
The festival is dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy who is worshipped as the protector of the devotees and the embodiment of divine energy.
The preparations for Aswathi Pongala begin well in advance with devotees cleaning and decorating the temple premises. Streets and lanes around the temple are transformed into a vast ceremonial space where women set up small hearths and arrange ingredients for the Pongala offering. The atmosphere is filled with devotion, rhythmic chants and the fragrance of freshly prepared offerings. Devotees wear traditional attire adding to the visual splendor of the occasion.
The festival follows strict rituals beginning with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp inside the temple by the priests. As the Aswathi star rises, women start cooking the Pongala simultaneously in thousands of hearths laid out in the temple courtyard and surrounding streets.
