The Ashwathi Thookkam Mahotsavam at Mudippura Sree Bhadrakali Temple, Trivandrum is one of the most vibrant and spiritually significant festivals in the region attracting devotees from near and far.
Dedicated to Sree Bhadrakali Devi, the temple celebrates the goddess’s blessings, protection and benevolence and the festival serves as a major occasion for the local community to express their devotion and gratitude.
The festival is marked by a series of elaborate rituals and cultural events that combine faith, tradition and artistry.
Central to the celebrations is the Thookkam ritual, a unique offering in which devotees perform ceremonial suspension or hanging as a symbol of devotion and surrender to the goddess. Alongside this, other sacred rituals such as Kuthiyottam, Thalappoli, Urul and Kumbham are performed with precision and reverence. The festival also includes Ganapathi Homam, Pushpabhishekam and Deepa Aradhana creating an atmosphere of divine energy and spiritual fervor throughout the temple premises.
Cultural programs form an integral part of the festival showcasing traditional Kerala art forms such as Chenda Melam, Shinkari Melam, Vilappattu, Kaikottikali and Thiruvathira dances. These performances not only entertain but also preserve and propagate the rich artistic heritage associated with temple festivals in Kerala. The festival atmosphere is further enhanced by Annadanam where hundreds of devotees partake in free meals offered in the name of the deity symbolizing community bonding and shared devotion.
