Maha Shivaratri Mahotsavam 2026 at Thiru Arangal Sree Mahadevar Temple in Trivandrum is a highly anticipated spiritual and cultural event that draws devotees from across Kerala and beyond. Celebrated annually, this festival honors Lord Shiva and marks the convergence of devotion, rituals and traditional temple arts.
The temple renowned for its serene location and historic significance becomes a vibrant center of spiritual energy during this festival.
The celebrations begin early in the morning with special poojas including the Shiva Sahasranama Archana, where thousands of names of Lord Shiva are recited in devotion. Devotees participate in the Deepak Darshan witnessing rows of oil lamps illuminating the temple creating a mesmerizing and divine atmosphere. The festival also features the Rishabha Vahana Ezhunnallath, a ceremonial procession where the deity is mounted on Nandi accompanied by traditional music, drum beats and chants.
In addition to these rituals, Yam Poojas and 108 pradakshinas are performed symbolizing spiritual cleansing and devotion. The Shayana Pradakshina where devotees circumambulate the deity in a reclining posture and the Sree Bhootha Bali an offering ritual for divine spirits, are integral parts of the festival.
One of the highlights is the grand elephant procession adding color and grandeur to the celebrations.
The festival also emphasizes community participation through prasada offerings where devotees contribute rice, coconut, vegetables and other items for distribution. From noon onwards, prasada bhojanam is served to all devotees reinforcing the sense of unity, sharing and devotion.
