The Varshika Mahotsavam at Sree Bhadrakaali Devi Temple, Trivandrum is one of the most celebrated and spiritually significant events in the region drawing devotees from across Kerala and beyond. This annual festival is dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali revered as the embodiment of power, protection and benevolence.
The temple known for its ancient heritage and sacred traditions becomes the vibrant center of devotion, cultural expression, and community celebration during the festival period.
The festival opens with the Maha Ganapathi Homam, a sacred fire ritual invoking Lord Ganesha for the removal of obstacles and the smooth conduct of the festivities. Throughout the day, various poojas and rituals are performed, including traditional Bhadrakali poojas, Iruppi Pooja and Gurusi Tarpanam reflecting centuries-old customs. Devotees actively participate in these rituals, offering prayers and seeking the blessings of the goddess for prosperity, health and well being.
One of the key highlights of the Mahotsavam is the Ezhunnallathu, the ceremonial procession of the goddess accompanied by traditional music, folk arts and vibrant ensembles. This procession winds through nearby villages and temple roads creating a captivating display of faith and cultural heritage. Alongside the rituals, the temple hosts a series of cultural programs, including Thiruvathira, Kaikottikali, classical music and dance performances and folk art presentations which celebrate Kerala’s rich artistic traditions.
A unique aspect of the festival is the Annadanam, a community feast where devotees and visitors are served a variety of traditional delicacies symbolizing the spirit of sharing and community welfare. In the evenings, the temple premises come alive with devotional songs, bhajans and other entertainment creating an atmosphere of joy and spiritual devotion.
