Alpasi Utsavam is one of the most sacred and magnificent annual festivals celebrated at Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Trivandrum, Kerala. Observed during the Malayalam month of Thulam (October–November), this ten-day festival attracts thousands of devotees, pilgrims, and visitors from different parts of India and abroad. Dedicated to Lord Padmanabha, the festival reflects the rich spiritual heritage, royal traditions and temple customs that have been preserved for centuries in the historic temple.
The celebrations begin with the sacred Kodiyettam ceremony, which marks the official commencement of the festival. Throughout the ten days, the temple witnesses special poojas, traditional rituals, Vedic chanting, cultural performances, and grand processions accompanied by traditional temple instruments such as chenda, maddalam and nadaswaram. The beautifully decorated idols of the deities are ceremoniously taken around the temple premises in majestic processions creating a divine and spiritually uplifting atmosphere for devotees.
One of the most important attractions of Alpasi Utsavam is the Pallivetta ritual, symbolizing the divine hunting expedition of the deity. Another major highlight is the grand Aarattu procession held on the final day of the festival. During this sacred ceremony, the idol of Lord Padmanabha is taken in a majestic procession to Shangumugham Beach for the ceremonial holy bath. Members of the former Travancore royal family traditionally participate in this procession, adding historical and cultural significance to the event.
The temple premises during Alpasi Utsavam are filled with devotional fervor, oil lamps, floral decorations, and the continuous chanting of sacred hymns. Devotees believe that participating in the festival and receiving the blessings of the deity brings peace, prosperity, and spiritual fulfillment.
