Makara Vilakku Aarattu Utsavam at Chowara Sree Dharma Sastha Temple popularly known as Thekkan Sabarimala is one of the most revered annual temple festivals in the Thiruvananthapuram region of Kerala.
Dedicated to Lord Ayyappa the temple becomes a vibrant spiritual center during this auspicious festival welcoming thousands of devotees who gather to witness and participate in its sacred rituals and age-old traditions.
The festival is deeply rooted in Kerala’s devotional culture and reflects the spiritual values of discipline, devotion and communal harmony associated with Lord Ayyappa worship. One of the most significant rituals of the Utsavam is Petta Thullal symbolizing the divine journey of the deity and performed with great fervor and devotion. This ritual attracts large crowds and is considered a spiritually powerful moment of the celebrations.
Another major highlight is the Thiruvabharana Ghoshayatra, the ceremonial procession of sacred ornaments which fills the temple surroundings with chants, traditional percussion, and devotional songs.
