The Aarattu Mahotsavam at Panathura Sree Subrahmanya Swami Temple in Trivandrum is one of the most vibrant and spiritually significant temple festivals in Kerala. Celebrated over a period of ten days, this annual event draws devotees from across the state and beyond to participate in a series of sacred rituals, cultural programs and communal celebrations.
The festival begins with Palliyunarthal, the ceremonial raising of the deity followed by Nirmalya Darshanam where devotees get a special glimpse of the previous day’s offerings. Early morning rituals like the Maha Ganapathi Homam and Aditya Pongala set the spiritual tone for the day invoking divine blessings and prosperity for all attendees.
Throughout the festival, the temple premises come alive with devotional music, traditional dances and processions. Pushpaabhishekam the offering of flowers to the deity and Deepaaradhana, the evening lamp rituals are performed daily creating a deeply devotional atmosphere.
Special cultural programs including classical dance, instrumental music and folk performances by renowned local groups add to the celebratory spirit and showcase Kerala’s rich artistic heritage.
Community meals, known as Samuhasadyam are organized every day allowing devotees and visitors to share in the spirit of togetherness and devotion. Other unique rituals like Kaikottikali, Agnikavadi and Palkavadi are highlights of the festival drawing large crowds eager to witness these vibrant traditions. The festival concludes with the Aarattu, the holy bath of the deity symbolizing purification and divine blessings.
