Originally a field area, it became a place of worship primarily for Goddess Sri Bhadrakali, with farmers celebrating a seven-day festival annually after harvesting in the paddy fields.
While the main deity is Goddess Durga Devi, Bhadrakali also holds equal importance in the temple's worship. Additionally, the temple pays homage to sub-deities such as Ganesha and Nagaraja.
Festivals
The Temple has a number of festivals. The important ones are :
Naranga Vilakku Vazhipadu
The Naranga Vilakku Vazhipadu, a ritual involving lighting lamps with lemons, is performed on Tuesdays to appease Rahu dosha, a malefic influence in Vedic astrology. This ritual, observed with devotion, is believed to mitigate the adverse effects of Rahu dosha and bring blessings and protection from malevolent planetary influences. Devotees seek the divine grace and intervention of the deity to overcome obstacles and achieve harmony and prosperity in their lives.
Prathishta Vaarshikam
The Prathishta Vaarshikam, or the annual consecration ceremony, held in April at Sri Arayallur Temple near Tirumala in Thiruvananthapuram city, is a significant event in the temple's calendar. During this ceremony, elaborate rituals are conducted to renew and reinforce the divine presence of the temple deity, Goddess Durga Devi, and other associated deities like Bhadrakali, Ganesha, and Nagaraja. Devotees gather to witness the sacred ceremonies, offer prayers, and seek blessings for prosperity, well-being, and spiritual fulfillment in the coming year.
