Located in Kachani, near Vattiyurkavu in Thiruvananthapuram district, the temple is easily accessible approximately 11 km from Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station and 12 km from Kizhakke‑Kotta.
Its tranquil surroundings, once densely wooded with punna trees, inspired the name “Punnamkonam.” A distinctive feature of this temple is its Nagarukavu, a sacred grove in which serpent deities are venerated through age-old rituals. Monthly Ayilya Pooja and special programmes such as Kalamezhuthu Paattu are conducted here, reflecting the temple’s commitment to nature worship and traditional Kerala serpent lore.
Historically, the temple’s origin is intertwined with the royal household the Ilankamon Nair family of Padmanabhaswamy’s court settled here, and the temple later came under the care of a registered trust. Devotees come to Punnamkonam not only for daily worship but also for deep spiritual experiences, participating in abhishekams, homams, archana, and pushpanjali. Navaratri / Vijayadashami
The temple’s most prominent festival, dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy, is celebrated during Navaratri. Devotees participate in special poojas, abhishekams, and cultural programs, culminating on Vijayadashami, which is considered highly auspicious for receiving the Goddess’s blessings.
Ayilyam Festival
Held monthly on the Ayilyam star day, this festival is dedicated to the Nāga deities in the temple’s sacred grove (Nagarukavu). Devotees perform Ayilyam Pooja, Kalamezhuthu, and Paattu, offering reverence to serpent gods for protection, fertility, and prosperity.
Bhagavathy Utsavam / Annual Temple Festival
A multi-day celebration with processions, homams, archana, and devotional music, this festival attracts devotees from surrounding villages. Rituals include offerings to sub-deities and communal feasts, emphasizing both spiritual devotion and social bonding.
