Oorottu Maholsavam
The Oorottu Maholsavam is an annual festival celebrated at the Oorootu Vila Bhadrakali Temple in Balaramapuram, Thiruvananthapuram district, Kerala, typically during the Malayalam month of Kumbham. During this festival, devotees gather to honor Goddess Bhadrakali with fervent prayers and offerings. The festival features elaborate rituals, colorful processions, cultural performances, and traditional arts, creating a vibrant atmosphere of devotion and celebration.
Pongala
Pongala is a significant offering made to the goddess during festivals. During the Pongala festival, devotees, mostly women, gather to cook a special rice dish called Pongala in earthen pots as an offering to the goddess Bhadrakali. The Pongala is prepared with ingredients such as rice, jaggery, coconut, and ghee, and is cooked on open fires within the temple premises. Once the Pongala is cooked, it is offered to the deity as a form of devotion, and later distributed among the devotees as prasad.
