The main deity of the temple is Lord Ayyappa, also known as Sastha or Dharma Shastha, who is revered as the son of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu (in the form of Mohini). Lord Ayyappa is worshipped by millions of devotees, especially those who undertake the pilgrimage to the Sabarimala Temple.
Ayyappa is considered the presiding deity of dharma (righteousness) and is revered as a protector and savior of his devotees. He is believed to have the power to dispel evil forces, grant wishes, and bestow blessings upon his devotees.
Festivals
The Temple has a number of festivals. The important ones are :
Mandala Pooja
Mandala Pooja is a significant festival observed in Ayyappa temples, including Karikkuzhy Sree Ayyappa Temple. It marks the culmination of the Mandala Vratham period, which precedes the annual pilgrimage to Sabarimala. Devotees undertake various rituals and offerings during this time, seeking the blessings of Lord Ayyappa.
Makaravilakku
Makaravilakku is another important festival celebrated at the temple. It falls on the auspicious occasion of Makara Sankranti and marks the culmination of the Sabarimala pilgrimage season. Devotees gather to witness the divine Makaravilakku, a celestial light that appears at Ponnambalamedu near Sabarimala, and offer prayers to Lord Ayyappa for blessings and prosperity.
