The temple is situated on the left bank of the sacred Karamana River, a holy river that originates from the Agastya Hills (Agastyaparvatha), where Sage Agastya once performed intense penance. The river, flowing through forests rich in medicinal herbs, reaches the sea after passing through this village.
Uniquely, this is the only place along its entire course where the river flows eastward, adding to the spiritual significance of the location. The temple itself is also east-facing, aligned with the river’s direction. The main deity, Lord Mahavishnu, is worshipped in a rare and unique form. The idol is a beautiful Krishna Shila (black stone) sculpture, depicting the Lord with conch and discus, holding a lotus in the right hand, and the left hand tied across the waist in a four-armed posture. Another special feature is the sacred symbol Sreevatsa, carved on the right side of the chest. An inscription engraved in the Malayayama script on the right side of the temple steps was translated in 1963 by the temple committee, confirming that the consecration of the temple took place on March 7, AD 1185. A Devaprasnam conducted in 1990 by a renowned astrologer and tantra expert revealed that the temple is over 800 years old, and that the idol itself is even older. The temple also houses sub-deities including Ganapathi, Sastha, Nagaraja, and Devi. As instructed in the Devaprasnam, a Yogeeshwara Sthana was established in 1995 to honor the great saint believed to be connected with the temple’s origin.
