Vishu Mahotsavam at Chirakkakkode Sree Subramanya Swami Temple is one of the most revered and vibrant festivals in Thrissur, attracting devotees from across Kerala and beyond. This annual celebration is dedicated to Lord Subramanya Swami, the divine commander of the celestial forces who is worshipped for protection, prosperity and spiritual blessings.
The festival marks the traditional Malayalam New Year and is deeply rooted in Kerala’s cultural and religious heritage.
The festivities begin with the Kodiyettam, the ceremonial flag hoisting which signifies the formal commencement of the Mahotsavam. This event is accompanied by the rhythmic beats of traditional percussion ensembles like Chenda Melam creating an atmosphere of divine energy and devotion. One of the highlights of the festival is the Pallivetta which represents the triumph of good over evil. The deity is taken out in a grand procession accompanied by elaborate rituals and chants that captivate devotees and visitors alike.
Another significant event is the Aarattu, the ceremonial bathing of the deity which is considered a sacred ritual purifying both the deity and the devotees’ hearts. Throughout the festival, devotees participate in special poojas, abhishekams and devotional music sessions fostering spiritual devotion and community bonding.
Vishu is also celebrated with Annadanam, the offering of food to devotees symbolizing abundance and the sharing of blessings. The temple premises are beautifully decorated and the air is filled with the fragrance of incense and flowers creating a serene yet festive ambiance.
