Karkidaka Vavu, also known as Vavu Bali, is observed on the no-moon day (Amavasi) in the Malayalam month of Karkidakam, which falls between July and August in the Gregorian calendar. On this day, Hindus perform rites for their departed parents, grandparents, siblings, children, and relatives to bring peace to their souls.
The ritual, known as Bali, must traditionally be performed near a water body—either a riverbank or seashore. Ivormadom is considered one of the most spiritually powerful and auspicious locations in Kerala to perform these rites. The belief is that the sacred waters of Bharathappuzha help purify, guide, and bless the souls of ancestors. While Bali can be performed on the star (Nakshatra) of the deceased person, the Karkidaka Vavu Bali is considered especially holy. It is believed that performing Bali on this specific no-moon day brings greater spiritual merit, offering peace and liberation to the departed. Thus, Karkidaka Vavu Bali at Ivormadom Sreekrishna Kshethram stands as a deeply revered annual event where countless devotees gather to honor their ancestors and seek blessings for their families.
